About Our Menu

The Red Herring Vegetarian Restaurant seeks to provide the best vegan and vegetarian food in Champaign-Urbana! With a new 100% vegan menu including gluten-free options and nutritional guides, we're hoping to show that eating healthy, happy, and well are as easy as vegan pie!  The students and faculty being gone for the Summer, our menu also pares down but abundance of the Earth makes for an even more fresh menu. We look forward to serving you!

Our Food Philosophy

Food is sustenance, life, and medicine. And lucky for us…it can be delicious medicine! At the Red Herring, we know that food is powerful and derives much of its power from plant life. Plants are here to help us.  We focus on health. To us, being a vegetarian, a vegan, a pescatarian, an omnivore, a lacto-ovo vegetarian, etc, is a personal choice. And it needn’t be carved in stone.

What is Veganism?

The word "vegan" was coined in 1944 by Donald Watson of the Vegan Society of the UK. This definition states: "Veganism is a way of living that seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing and any other purpose. " As you can see, veganism is not defined as a diet, but a way of living. While vegans follow an animal-free diet, they also do not wear animals or use them for entertainment or any other purpose.
