Meet
the new staff!
That's Mike Schmitz in the blue t-shirt.
Mike comes to us from the Luna Cafe.
The
Red Herring Vegetarian Restaurant has been serving the Urbana-Champaign
community for over thirty years. It was started by the Channing-Murray
Foundation as a way to put Unitarian-Universalist
principles into action. We are non-profit, so all the money
we make goes back into making the restaurant better for our cooks
and customers, and to keeping our prices accessible to folks trying
to live a healthy vegetarian lifestyle. Cooperatively run, the Herring
serves lunch five days a week from 11am-3pm when U of I is in session.
We are committed to providing healthier lunch alternatives by cooking
from scratch.
Food
justice is also important to the Red Herring, so we try to cook with
local ingredients whenever possible. We also carry our own Fair Trade
Organic Coffee. We understand that leading a healthy lifestyle can
be expensive, so we offer folks the opportunity to volunteer in exchange
for a meal. This also gives people hands-on kitchen experience! We
seek to educate the public about food, including the uses of different
vegetables and spices, how to replace animal products in everyday
cooking, and various issues of food and environmental justice. All
of this takes a LOT of LOVE: from Channing-Murray, from Red Herring
Staff, and most importantly from Red Herring Volunteers and Patrons.
We couldn't do it without you!
